Faculty Physicians and Scientists – At the Forefront of Discovery
IU Simon Cancer Center physicians and scientists are faculty from the IU Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health and Dentistry, and the Purdue University School of Science. As expert researchers and educators, IU Simon Cancer Center doctors and scientists are at the forefront of new ideas and solutions to treat, detect and prevent cancer.
As a result of this expertise, the IU Simon Cancer Center consistently ranks as one of the top cancer treatment programs in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report’s "America's Best Hospitals Guide."
A Team Approach to Treatment
The IU Simon Cancer Center uses a team approach which combines treatment, research and supportive-care expertise for each patient. This approach gives patients the best chance for recovery.
Your team might include a:
- medical oncologist
- radiation oncologist
- surgical oncologist
- pathologist
- hematologist
- molecular geneticist
- oncology nurse
- physical, occupational and/or speech therapist
- oncology social worker
- psychologist or psychiatrist
- dietician
This collaborative, interdisciplinary team approach also helps lead to clinical breakthroughs which most often result from a series of related discoveries. Working closely together, physicians and scientists can identify clinical problems that need addressed in the lab and can speed the translation of promising laboratory research into new treatments.
Comprehensive Care, One Central Location
Our interdisciplinary teams of professionals provide patients and their families with the most comprehensive treatment options available, addressing the patient’s emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.
This comprehensive, integrated care is delivered to patients and families from one central, convenient location on the IU School of Medicine campus.
Pioneering the Next Generation of Care
Our research expertise is known around the world. Our research offers renewed hope for patients and families and new options in cancer care.
Advances in basic science and clinical research at the IU Simon Cancer Center offer patients diagnostic, treatment and prevention options not available elsewhere. Also, when patients choose to participate in a clinical trial, patients and health care professionals benefit nationwide. Patient participation in research helps improve cancer care, ultimately reducing death and suffering due to cancer.
The National Cancer Institute is looking to the IU Simon Cancer Center to pioneer new standards of care for the next generation of cancer patients.
Some of our research and breakthrough treatments include:
- curative therapy for testicular cancer
- a cure for Fanconi Anemia (a pre-cancerous condition in children)
- cord blood transplantation innovations
- innovative radiation therapy techniques
- nerve-sparing surgery for urologic cancers
- development of drugs to stimulate blood cell production
- novel drug therapies for breast cancer
Educating Tomorrow’s Physicians and Researchers
The IU Simon Cancer Center offers a rich and challenging learning environment for medical, medical science and allied health professional students at every level. Our physician and research members teach nearly 2,000 students, residents and fellows each year, all while conducting their own research. The IU Simon Cancer Center faculty also sponsors several post-graduate educational programs each year for cancer specialists.
NCI Designation Benefits Patients
The IU Simon Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center in the state of Indiana that provides patient care. This designation recognizes IU Simon Cancer Center’s scientific excellence and helps fund life-saving research that ultimately benefits patients.
Through its cancer center designations, NCI recognizes the country’s premier centers for the study of cancer and the development of new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and therapy. These centers are also the principal deliverers of medical advances to the patients and families needing them; the chief educators of health-care professionals and the public; and a local, regional, and national resource.
These centers are central to national efforts to reduce the burden of cancer. Their impact goes well beyond its own walls into the communities it serves directly and into the world at large.
The IU Simon Cancer Center’s designation is accompanied by a support grant from the NCI, benefiting patients served by the IU Simon Cancer Center with funds needed to continue breaking new ground in innovative cancer research, treatment and care.
